Tuning a performance car is a specialty service, so when you want to maximise your vehicle’s power and performance, work with the specialists who truly understand it.

If you want more power, better fuel economy, sharper throttle response, or a suspension setup that actually suits how you drive, you need a Bundaberg workshop that knows performance from the ground up.

At Shift Automotive, tuning and performance upgrades are our specialty. Several of our team members drive modified vehicles themselves, which means we give you honest advice on what you need.

We work across a wide range of vehicles and setups. Whether you’re running a common-rail diesel 4×4 loaded up for touring, a daily driver you want a bit more grunt from, or a dedicated performance build, we have the skills and the equipment to do the job properly.

Our Bundaberg workshop is set up for diesel tuning, ECU remapping, intercooler and turbo upgrades, suspension modifications and more.

We’re also the only workshop in Bundaberg with a SafeTstop machine, which means any suspension or brake work we carry out can be verified with real data, not just a test drive.

Call the team at Shift Automotive in Bundaberg to talk through your performance goals.

Dyno Tuning in Bundaberg

Dyno tuning puts your vehicle on a dynamometer, a rolling road that measures actual power output at the wheels, and gives our technicians the data they need to get the most out of your engine.

The process starts with a baseline run to establish where your vehicle is now. From there, we can remap your ECU (Engine Control Unit) to adjust fuel delivery, boost pressure, ignition timing and other parameters. Each change is verified with another run on the dyno until we’ve found the best calibration for your specific setup. You leave with a before-and-after power graph showing exactly what the tune achieved.

ECU remapping is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available for modern diesel and petrol vehicles. Many factory engine maps are conservative, leaving a meaningful amount of power and torque on the table. A proper tune unlocks what’s already in the engine without adding mechanical complexity. For vehicles that have already had hardware upgrades like intercoolers, exhausts or intakes, a remap is often essential to make those parts work together properly.

We work with all common diesel and petrol platforms at our Bundaberg workshop, including HiLux, Ranger, Patrol, LandCruiser, Colorado and more. If you’re not sure whether your vehicle is a good candidate for a tune, call us, and we’ll give you an honest assessment.

iDrive

iDrive

iDrive is a throttle controller that removes the lag between pressing the accelerator and the engine actually responding. Most modern drive-by-wire vehicles have a delay built into their throttle response, particularly in economy modes. iDrive maps the accelerator pedal signal more directly, giving you sharper, more immediate acceleration when you want it.

Unlike a tune, iDrive doesn’t change what the engine produces. It changes how quickly the engine responds to your inputs. For 4×4 drivers in and around Bundaberg who spend time in technical terrain where precise throttle control matters, or for anyone who finds their vehicle feels sluggish off the mark, it’s a noticeable and affordable improvement. Settings can be adjusted on the fly to suit different driving conditions, from smooth economy for highway cruising to maximum responsiveness for off-road work.

4×4 Performance Upgrade

Bundaberg and the surrounding region is serious 4WD country. Plenty of our customers run their rigs hard, whether that’s touring the Outback, running Fraser Island tracks, or towing heavy loads for work. A factory 4×4 handles most of that well enough, but there’s a lot of room to make them more capable.

Our common-rail diesel performance upgrades are particularly popular with HiLux, Ranger, Prado and LandCruiser owners around Bundaberg. We specialise in optimising the full induction and fuel delivery system, including:

  • Oil catch can kits
  • Secondary fuel filter kits
  • Intercooler upgrades
  • Hard piping kits
  • Common-rail diesel diagnostics and tuning

These upgrades work best as a package. An intercooler upgrade that isn’t paired with a proper tune won’t deliver the same result as one that has been. When you book with us, we’ll talk through the full picture and recommend what actually makes sense for how you use your vehicle. If your 4×4 is also due for a suspension upgrade, we can handle that at the same time.

Suspension Lowering

Lowering a vehicle’s suspension brings its centre of gravity closer to the road, which reduces body roll through corners, improves steering response and gives the car a more planted feel at highway speeds. For street-driven vehicles in Bundaberg that never leave the blacktop, it’s one of the most effective handling improvements available.

The right approach depends on how much you want to lower the vehicle and how seriously you take on-road performance. A basic lowering spring swap will drop the ride height and modestly stiffen things up. A sports suspension kit with matched springs and dampers does the same job more thoroughly, reducing body roll and improving overall composure. A coilover setup gives you full adjustability over ride height and damping, which suits drivers who want to fine-tune handling characteristics or maintain alignment across different load configurations.

We stock performance suspension parts from KYB, Bilstein, King Springs, XYZ Coilovers and Nolathane, and we also offer wheel alignment after any suspension modification to make sure your tyres wear evenly. Before recommending anything, we’ll ask how you use the car and what the outcome needs to be. There’s no point in a setup that’s too stiff for daily driving if the car doubles as the family runabout.

Intercooler & Turbochargers

A turbocharger forces more air into the combustion chamber than the engine could draw in on its own, which allows more fuel to be burned and more power to be produced. The trade-off is heat: compressed air is hot, and hot air is less dense, which limits the gain. An intercooler sits between the turbocharger and the intake manifold, cooling that compressed air back down so the engine can take in a denser charge. Together, a well-matched turbo and intercooler upgrade can produce significant power and torque gains without touching the internals of the engine.

For vehicles already running a factory turbo, an intercooler upgrade is often the first hardware modification worth considering before a dyno tune. It reduces intake temperatures, which protects the engine and gives the ECU more room to work with during a remap.

We stock intercoolers and turbochargers from Garrett, VCM Performance, Process West, Harrop and others. If you’re planning a staged build, we can help you sequence the upgrades so each one complements the next rather than creating imbalances in the system.

Camshaft Upgrade

A camshaft upgrade changes the timing and duration of valve opening and closing. Factory camshafts are ground to a profile that prioritises smooth idle, good low-end torque and fuel economy across a broad range of driving conditions. A performance camshaft profile shifts emphasis toward higher revs, increasing power output in the upper part of the rev range.

Camshaft upgrades suit vehicles that have already had other work done and where the rest of the drivetrain is set up to take advantage of the change. It’s not a first step, but it’s an effective one for builds where you’re looking for more top-end power without further increasing displacement or boost. Our technicians can assess whether your engine and current setup are good candidates and source camshafts through VCM Performance and other suppliers.

Tuning & Performance FAQs

Tuning costs vary depending on the vehicle, the complexity of the remap and whether any hardware changes are involved. Call us on 07 4196 0730 for a quote specific to your vehicle and goals.

This depends on your vehicle’s warranty terms and whether you’re still within the manufacturer’s warranty period. In many cases, a tune by a qualified workshop using appropriate equipment won’t void a warranty, but this varies. We can talk through your specific situation before you commit to anything. If you’re unsure about your vehicle’s warranty status, check with your dealer before booking.

We work across a wide range of diesel and petrol vehicles, including HiLux, Ranger, Patrol, LandCruiser, Prado, Colorado and others. If you’re not sure whether we can help with your vehicle, give us a call.

A tune (ECU remap) changes what the engine produces by modifying fuel, boost and timing parameters. An iDrive changes how quickly the engine responds to your accelerator input. They do different things and aren’t substitutes for each other. In some cases, both are worth having.

In most cases, yes. Hardware upgrades change the airflow characteristics of the engine, and a factory ECU map won’t account for those changes. A remap after hardware upgrades ensures everything works together properly and that you’re actually getting the benefit of the parts you’ve fitted.

Most dyno tuning sessions take between two and four hours, depending on the vehicle and the scope of the remap. We’ll give you a more specific estimate when you book.

Yes. We’re happy to help plan a sequence of upgrades that makes sense for your budget and goals, so each modification complements the next rather than creating problems down the track.
